Adventure is a very important aspect in modeling, mentoring, and discipling young men. God has designed men to take risks and to test themselves. This is the pre-curser to taking responsibility for oneself and others. It tests your mettle. It tests your willingness to push through discomfort and even fear. When we do it together, we help each other up and onward. Being a man is not a one man sport. So we have roped in a couple of hard, tough, robust men, who love Jesus and seek Him first, to accompany us on our adventures.
Cederberg is majestic and spectacular mountain range. It is harsh and unforgiving. Heavy packs for a few nights and long days. Stu Summerfield led the boys for 4 days 3 nights. What a legend.
A friend, Dave Penna, roped in a couple of mates from Church, Peter Holloway and Justin van Winkel, and took us out into False Bay on doubles. We did a grueling 13,7 km paddle from Fishhoek to Simonstown and back. These guys are athletes and really tough. Great time on the water and connecting with other men who love the Lord. Then Dave took the guys on singles and taught them to master the singles. I think they are hooked. Boys did really well and came home really tired. Dave took us to the Silvermine crags, and the lads did some abseiling and climbing. Tested at a number of levels. The boys have learned so much about themselves, and how to trust themselves as they rely on others. Faith is not a solo sport either. Fellowship and church family is vital as we follow Jesus.
It has been encouraging to see the chaps step up and enter into things that really stretch them, causing them to dig deep to see challenges through. This is discipleship, raising up young men to take their place in the line of saints that will be rewarded for their faithfulness in their service of the Lord.
